Chapter 16:

As it turned out, Alice White, law clerk and lover of fairies, was harder to track down than he thought she would be.

He sighed and leaned back in his desk chair, swiveling toward the window. “No, that can’t be her. Eighty-eight is definitely too old.”

Josh groaned his frustration on the other end of the phone, promised to try again, and hung up. Ashton ran a hand down his face, feeling like a complete dick for making his intern spend his time cyberstalking some woman instead of learning the ins and outs of real estate. He would make it up to him. Promote him or something. But that was a problem for another day.

Today was Wednesday. It was already two and a half days later than he had promised to find Alice, and while one part of him was fucking thrilled to have Lulu and Coralie still here, he was racked with guilt for not being able to get them back home quicker.

He hadn’t exactly lied on Saturday when he said Alice didn’t work on the weekends, but he hadn’t actually confirmed it. Just sort of assumed she didn’t. Okay, he’d lied. He hadn’t checked at all. He just…he just wanted them to stay a little longer.

But then Monday dawned harsh and bright, forcing him to act, find Alice, give up his fairies for good. Except he’d been spared. Alice no longer worked for that judge. The administrative assistant informed him quite coolly that he was not able to say where she went.

Was he an asshole for feeling relieved? Was he a selfish bastard for being so goddamn happy they weren’t leaving yet? Yes and yes. He most definitely was.

Even Kevin glared at him as he wove between his feet, his one eye narrowed in disbelief at his level of dickheadedness. But he was trying. Now he was trying anyway. He had Josh on the job and if a twenty-two-year-old couldn’t track someone down online then who could?

He let out another sigh and leaned down to scratch Kevin’s head. The cat allowed it but refused to look happy about it.

“I’m doing the best I can,” Ashton grumbled to his judgy pet.

He glanced back at his computer. It had fallen asleep again, so all he could see was his reflection in the black screen. His beard was coming in thicker, but Lulu liked it, so he hadn’t bothered to shave.

He was supposed to be working from home this week after telling everyone he had a family issue to attend to. He’d left Brandon, his second-in-command and best friend since college, in charge. Brandon had called him back as soon as he’d heard from Mateo, the gossiping bastard, that Ashton had left the job site with two barely dressed women on Friday.

“Family issues?” he’d practically shouted into the phone when Ashton answered. “Is that what you’re calling threesomes now?”

“Fuck off, Brandon.” Ashton refused to let Brandon turn whatever this thing was between him and the girls into something depraved.

“Wow, you’re not going to tell your best friend anything? That hurts, man.
